THE ROLE: Kate is the American wife of B. F. Pinkerton and has not yet been able to have a child. Kate discovers that her husband has previously married Cio-Cio-San (Madama Butterfly) and has a son with her. Confronted with this painful revelation, Kate navigates shock, hurt, moral ambiguity and being opportunistic as she guides the Pinkertons to provide a ‘better’ life for the boy with them; instead of with Butterfly. In this extremely compromised situation, Kate is both deeply empathetic whilst also desperately intent on raising the boy as her own son.
