THE OPERA

Violetta Valery has built a life on the margins of respectability, where admiration and privilege offer security but never acceptance. When she falls in love with the young Alfredo Germont, she dares to imagine a different future. Yet as family obligation, public morality and social expectation close in around them, she is forced to confront the impossible cost of living outside the boundaries of what society considers a “proper” woman.

This is Verdi’s La Traviata set in pre-independence Singapore; a society in the midst of profound transformation, where progress and possibility exist alongside deeply held ideas of respectability, family and social order. Inspired by the ideals and contradictions surrounding Singapore’s 1961 Women’s Charter, this bold new production asks whose lives are recognised, whose sacrifices are remembered, and what becomes of the women who fall beyond the boundaries of an acceptable society.
